New England marks the official launch of the American Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Days fundraising campaign with “50 Days of Daffodils.”
Dollars raised through Daffodil Days enable the Society to offer free programs and services that help people fight cancer with courage and optimism, while it provides day-to-day help, emotional support, and 24-hour information to help ease the cancer experience. Additionally, daffodil contributions provide the Society with much-needed dollars to fund groundbreaking cancer research, educate people about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection and advocate for meaningful public health policies that benefit the community.

Litchfield resident producer, writer and director, Paul Brighton of Salisbury Films to speak at the Salisbury School on February 10th 2012, at the Centennial Building from 6:30 - 9:30 pm. Special tasting from 6:30-7:45.

At 8pm audiences will be treated to a special symposium.

Paul will show "behind the scenes" footage and a sneak preview of Brighton's film "Brilliant Mistakes", featuring scenes from all over the northwest corner, and even scenes shot on campus at Salisbury School. A one-on-one question and answer period will follow. Special guests are slated to make appearances.

The good news? Salisbury School could stand to receive a generous donation from the film director that includes state-of-the-art Apple computers for their visual arts program, valued up to $20,000, if the production company can procure funding to complete feature film, "Brilliant Mistakes" through this event.

On Friday, February 10^th at 7 p.m. the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies will host a screening of the documentary Journey of the Universe, a 60-minute film exploring the human connection to Earth and the cosmos produced by Yale historian of religions Mary Evelyn Tucker. Following the screening, Tucker will be available for Q&A.

Journey of the Universe explores the origins of the universe, the emergence of life, and the rise of humans. Beautifully filmed on the Greek island of Samos, the inspiring narrative combines scientific discoveries in astronomy, geology, biology, and ecology with humanistic insights concerning the nature of the cosmos. Tucker wrote the film in collaboration with evolutionary philosopher Brian Thomas Swimme, and it is designed to inspire a closer relationship with Earth in a period of growing social and environmental crisis.

In the Gilded Age and beyond, high fashion decreed that violets were the flower of choice for Valentine's Day, Easter, and a fragrant corsage. At its height, in the years before World War I, Rhinebeck, New York, growers shipped millions of sweet violets (viola odorata) to New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and beyond. Sweet Violets includes vintage photographs and postcards, rare film footage,19^th century music and literature. All these, plus interviews with herbalists, historians and commercial growers, tell the neglected story of sweet violets and their effect on a small Hudson Valley town.

Produced and directed by Tobe Carey, director of The Catskill Mountain House and The World Around and Deep Water - Building the Catskill Water System (with Robbie Dupree and the late Artie Traum).

On Sunday, February 12 at 2 p.m. in Leamy Concert Hall, the United States Coast Guard Band welcomes guest conductor Timothy Reynish to the podium. Mr. Reynish conducts a program of new exciting music all previously unheard in Leamy Concert Hall. Esteemed British composers are featured throughout the concert, including Kenneth Hesketh's exuberant "Masque" and Richard Rodney Bennett's "Trumpet Concerto" featuring trumpeter Musician First Class Tom Brown. Soprano Musician First Class Megan Weikleenget sings Bernard Gilmore's arrangement of "Five Folksongs for Soprano and Band."
