Third Annual Kingston Chili Cook-Off Now Accepting Entries

The City of Kingston is currently accepting entries for the Third
Annual Kingston Chili Cook-Off. This year's Cook-Off will take place
Columbus Day Weekend, Saturday October 11th at T.R. Gallo Park on the
Rondout Watefront. The categories include: Individual, Organization,
Firehouse, Restaurant, Vegetarian, and Organic. Trophies are given to
the winners in each of these categories. Judges include Noah Sheetz,
the Executive Chef at the Executive Mansion of New York State in
Albany; Irena Chalmers, award winning culinary author and instructor at
the Culinary Institute of America; and Nilsa Rodriguez-Jaca, who is
also an instructor from the C.I.A. All profits from this event go to
the Children's Holiday Magic Fund, which benefits the children residing
in the domestic violence and homeless shelters in Kingston, during the
holidays. Last year's event raised over $7,000. Music, vendors, and
free children's activities are all a part of the event. Cooking begins
at 7:00 a.m., tasting begins at high noon. Winners will be announced
at 4:00 p.m. Admission is free. For more

Inspired by the roots of folkloric music from around the world, the
women of Gaia Roots (Patti Brinster, Aimee Gelinas, Shanti Stark and Lisa
Newell) blend vocal harmonies with percussion rhythms creating a unique weave
of traditional music and original creations. Gaia
Roots has performed in festivals with over 80,000 in attendance, school
assemblies, art centers, political and social rallies and events, cafes and on

PASTELS WORKSHOP with DOT CHAST at ACC

A
free three-session course on Working with Pastels will be presented by
Dot Chast at the Athens Cultural Center. It will begin on Friday,
August 8, 1-4 pm and continue on August 15 and 22. Adult and teen
participants will be provided with all art supplies needed.

Dot
Chast, a local artist and experienced teacher, encourages the freedom
to follow ones own ideas while providing explanations of the basics:
materials (pastels, oil pastels, colored pencils and types of papers)
and seeing and understanding variations in using color. She
will provide a few objects to observe and draw from or students may go
in their own directions with encouragement and help as needed.

A
native New Yorker, living in Greene County who works in pastels,
pencil, printmaking, watercolors and oils, she is a member of the
Woodstock Artists’ Association, the Tivoli Artists’ Co-op, the Greene
County Council on the Arts, All Arts Matter and, of course, the Athens
Cultural Center at 24 Second Street in Athens where these workshops
will take place.

Mini-Carnival to end Summer Reading at the Northeast Millerton Library

NorthEast-Millerton Library will be celebrating the end of their Summer
Reading Program with a mini-carnival on the front lawn of the library
on Saturday, August 9^th
from 11:00AM to 2:00PM. There will be games with prizes, food,
drinks and craft-making. There will a “Make Your Own Sundae”
courtesy of Stewarts in Pine Plains. We will be announcing the
winner of the “Guess the Number of Bugs in the Jar”. The winner
will be awarded a big basket of school supplies.

Children
are reminded to bring their reading records. Tokens that can be
“spent” during the carnival will be given for the books read during
the summer.

The
library congratulates everyone who read during the summer months.
Studies show that children have greater learning losses in both math
and reading over the summer months. Those who are brought to the library
for programs and book borrowing will re-enter school in the fall with
much less loss in reading skills than their counterparts who did not
enjoy the local library. In the elementary grades, a summer loss of
3 months accumulates to become a gap of 18 months by the end of 6th
grade. By middle school, summer reading loss…produces a cumulative
lag of two or more years in reading achievement, even when effective
instruction during the school year is available.

The Trolley Museum of New York invites
those interested in participating in the 14^th Annual Artists’
Soapbox Derby to attend a hands-on workshop on how to design and build
a derby car. The Soapbox Derby will be held on Sunday, August
17, 2008 at 1PM on lower Broadway in Kingston, NY.

The Workshop Series will be held in the
Trolley Museum Display and Restoration Shop at 89 East Strand.
The workshops are free, but you must make a reservation to attend one
of the workshops. The dates of the workshops are: July 26^th,
August 2^nd, 9^th & 16^th, all beginning
at 1PM. Some tools and materials will be available, but workshop
participants are encouraged to bring their own materials and tools.

All manner of designs are eligible.
The Artists’ Soapbox Derby is a race where speed is not the objective;
rather creativity in design and locomotion will be rewarded in many
categories of prizes. George and Nancy Donskoj, of Donskoj &
Company say “In the case of this Artists’ Soapbox Derby, it’s
more akin to a kinetic sculpture parade, it’s the style, creativity
and engineering that turns on the crowd”. “Awards and cash
prize money are based on design and the way the vehicles attain the

Mystery Dinner Theatre to Benefit Gulf Coast

	On August 9, 2008 the Red Hook United Methodist Church will host a
Mystery Dinner Theatre at 6:00 pm featuring Southern-style barbecue.  Dinner
will be catered by Max's Memphis Barbecue of Red hook and the menu will
include barbecued ribs, barbecued chicken wings, pulled pork, and all the 
fixings. Dessert will feature homemade pies of all varieties.  Guests will 
be entertained by a murder mystery/comedy - be careful, you just may find 
yourself "implicated" and involved!  Prizes will be awarded to those who solve 
the who-done-it and a Chinese Auction will be held.

	This fundraiser is being sponsored by the UMCOR (United Methodist
Committe on Relief) Volunteers in Mission Team, who will travel to
Biloxi, Mississippi Sept. 19-27, 2008.  This will be the third trip the team from
Red Hook UMC has taken volunteers to Biloxi to aid in rebuilding homes
devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  To date approximately eithty teams 
have travelled through UMCOR in NY State and Connecticut,
including teams from Red Hook, Kerhonkson, Hyde Park, Saugerties and Pougkeepsie.

	The team hopes to see much more progess on their upcoming third trip, but
realizes that it could take 5-10 years to rebuild the Gulf.  UMCOR has
committed to five years to the rebuilding effort in Biloxi.

	The team is looking for more volunteers to join the upcoming mission and
can use carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters, and anyone who can sling 
a hammer and be a good listener - the stories you will hear will change
your life and your efforts will be remembered and appreciated by the Gulf

Hook Public Library. The afternoon group meets the second Tuesday of

Members take turns leading the discussions. The book chosen for August
12 is A High Wind in Jamaica by Richard Hughes and the September selection is Kiran Desai's The Inheritance of Loss.

evening book discussion group meets on the third Monday of the month at

After-Hours Mixer on
Historic Huguenot Street

The New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce
will hold its August After-Hours Mixer Tuesday,
August 12, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30
p.m. at The DuBois Fort Visitor
Center, Historic Huguenot Street, New Paltz. Reservations are

on – Huguenot style. Come to The DuBois Fort
Visitor Center and enjoy a summer's evening on Historic Huguenot Street. Also,
be among the first to see the newly restored and renovated
Jean Hasbrouck House, complete with a newly built north facade, reproduction
Dutch casement windows and a faithful mid-18th century interpretation.

WHAT: Green Drinks is
a monthly networking concept that is international and now in almost 400
cities world-wide. It's an opportunity for people who work in the environmental
fields, the sustainably minded and the eco-curious to meet like-minded
souls over drinks to share, inquire, brain storm, find job
leads, make and hang out with new friends. The Hudson Valley Green Drinks chapter
was officially launched in April 2008.

about the work the club is doing with the Dinsmore Golf Club to make it
bird friendly. He'll have some tips for us too on what we can do at home.

Olana State Historic Site to Host Chamber Business After Hours

Join the Chamber to learn about Columbia
County’s rich history as Olana State Historic Site hosts a Business After
Hours on Wednesday, August 13. The event will be held in the new Wagon
House Education Center and will run from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Olana is located
on Route 9G in Hudson.

Named for a fortress treasure-house in ancient Persia, Olana was the home of
Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), one of America's most important artists,
a student of Thomas Cole, and a major figure in the Hudson River School of
landscape painting. Built high on a hill near Hudson, New York between 1870
and 1891, then as now, Olana offers magnificent sweeping vistas of the
Catskill Mountains, the Hudson River and the Taconic Hills. Today, Olana is
a New York State Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark, and one of the
most popular tourist destinations in the Hudson Valley and upstate New York.
Called by Church "the Center of the World," Olana's Persian style house and
250 acres of picturesque grounds are a masterpiece as grand as any of his
paintings.
