The City of Kingston is currently accepting entries for the Third
Annual Kingston Chili Cook-Off. This year's Cook-Off will take place
Columbus Day Weekend\, Saturday October 11th at T.R. Gallo Park on the
Rondout Watefront. The categories include\: Individual\, Organization\,
Firehouse\, Restaurant\, Vegetarian\, and Organic. Trophies are given to
the winners in each of these categories. Judges include Noah Sheetz\,
the Executive Chef at the Executive Mansion of New York State in
Albany\; Irena Chalmers\, award winning culinary author and instructor at
the Culinary Institute of America\; and Nilsa Rodriguez-Jaca\, who is
also an instructor from the C.I.A. All profits from this event go to
the Children's Holiday Magic Fund\, which benefits the children residing
in the domestic violence and homeless shelters in Kingston\, during the
holidays. Last year's event raised over $7\,000. Music\, vendors\, and
free children's activities are all a part of the event. Cooking begins
at 7\:00 a.m.\, tasting begins at high noon. Winners will be announced

PASTELS WORKSHOP with DOT CHAST at ACC
A
free three-session course on Working with Pastels will be presented by
Dot Chast at the Athens Cultural Center. It will begin on Friday\,
August 8\, 1-4 pm and continue on August 15 and 22. Adult and teen
participants will be provided with all art supplies needed.
Dot
Chast\, a local artist and experienced teacher\, encourages the freedom
to follow ones own ideas while providing explanations of the basics\:
materials (pastels\, oil pastels\, colored pencils and types of papers)
and seeing and understanding variations in using color. She
will provide a few objects to observe and draw from or students may go
in their own directions with encouragement and help as needed.
A
native New Yorker\, living in Greene County who works in pastels\,
pencil\, printmaking\, watercolors and oils\, she is a member of the
Woodstock Artists’ Association\, the Tivoli Artists’ Co-op\, the Greene
County Council on the Arts\, All Arts Matter and\, of course\, the Athens
Cultural Center at 24 Second Street in Athens where these workshops
will take place.

Artists from Norfolk\, Canaan\, Ashley Falls\, New Marlborough\, and
Colebrook will open their studios to visitors on Saturday August 9\,
2008 from 10am to 5pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet
local artists and view their work at the source\, the artist’s creative
space. Much of the work will be for sale\, providing you with a chance
to acquire original pieces directly from the artist.

are reminded to bring their reading records. Tokens that can be
“spent” during the carnival will be given for the books read during
the summer.

library congratulates everyone who read during the summer months.
Studies show that children have greater learning losses in both math
and reading over the summer months. Those who are brought to the library
for programs and book borrowing will re-enter school in the fall with
much less loss in reading skills than their counterparts who did not
enjoy the local library. In the elementary grades\, a summer loss of
3 months accumulates to become a gap of 18 months by the end of 6th
grade. By middle school\, summer reading loss…produces a cumulative
lag of two or more years in reading achievement\, even when effective
instruction during the school year is available.

Soapbox Derby to attend a hands-on workshop on how to design and build
a derby car. \; The Soapbox Derby will be held on Sunday\, August

The Workshop Series will be held in the
Trolley Museum Display and Restoration Shop at 89 East Strand. \;

This fundraiser is being sponsored by the UMCOR (United Methodist
Committe on Relief) Volunteers in Mission Team\, who will travel to
Biloxi\, Mississippi Sept. 19-27\, 2008. This will be the third trip the team from
Red Hook UMC has taken volunteers to Biloxi to aid in rebuilding homes
devastated by Hurricane Katrina. To date approximately eithty teams
have travelled through UMCOR in NY State and Connecticut\,
including teams from Red Hook\, Kerhonkson\, Hyde Park\, Saugerties and Pougkeepsie.
The team hopes to see much more progess on their upcoming third trip\, but
realizes that it could take 5-10 years to rebuild the Gulf. UMCOR has
committed to five years to the rebuilding effort in Biloxi.
The team is looking for more volunteers to join the upcoming mission and
can use carpenters\, plumbers\, electricians\, painters\, and anyone who can sling
a hammer and be a good listener - the stories you will hear will change
your life and your efforts will be remembered and appreciated by the Gulf

County’s rich history as Olana State Historic Site hosts a Business After
Hours on Wednesday\, August 13. The event will be held in the new Wagon
House Education Center and will run from 5\:00 to 7\:00 pm. Olana is located
on Route 9G in Hudson.
Named for a fortress treasure-house in ancient Persia\, Olana was the home of
Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900)\, one of America's most important artists\,
a student of Thomas Cole\, and a major figure in the Hudson River School of
landscape painting. Built high on a hill near Hudson\, New York between 1870
and 1891\, then as now\, Olana offers magnificent sweeping vistas of the
Catskill Mountains\, the Hudson River and the Taconic Hills. Today\, Olana is
a New York State Historic Site\, a National Historic Landmark\, and one of the
most popular tourist destinations in the Hudson Valley and upstate New York.
Called by Church "\;the Center of the World\,"\; Olana's Persian style house and
250 acres of picturesque grounds are a masterpiece as grand as any of his
paintings.
